A pun isn't about just throwing in a snide reference to the material and expecting people to groan.
It's about slipping it in when people least expect it. To make people stop and think it over. It makes the moment when they realize it was a horrible pun and the groan that follows that much sweeter.
Otherwise you're just stuck with a black hole of awkward negative space, and that's just no fun.
